SWAP mission accomplished

April 25, 2010

The SWAP is sewn. The sewing room is clean for the first time since we moved into this place almost two months ago.

The photos, however, are not taken. That will happen this week.

Right now, I’m just enjoying being done.

Always check the rules…

April 23, 2010

…particularly before you hyperventilate about everything that needs to get accomplished in a short period of time.

I doublechecked the SWAP rules and realized that it does, indeed, say I can include something previously sewn and I made a shirt just before the SWAP was announced that fits with my wardrobe and theme.

So it goes in and the blouse I was concerned about for its puffy sleeves, comes out.  I don’t know how well it would be suited to my office anyway. It’s rather cold in there for blouses much of the time.

Decision made.

SWAP Progress

April 22, 2010

Iam racing against time to get my first SWAP done in time for the deadline, so blogging about sewing has taken a back seat to the actual sewing. I just wanted to stop in and share my progress though.

Here’s what I have so far (apologies for photo quality)

SWAP bottoms

These are the four bottoms I have made: 3 pairs of pants and a skirt. They’ve all been worn in my day to day life as well. Because I am doing SWAP #1, these four mean I am done that part of the SWAP – YAY!

SWAP tops

Here are the four tops I have completed so far. I have two blouses, a vest and a stretchy top. This leaves me with two more blouses and my wildcard option to go.

I’m planning to do a simple dress for my wildcard option and the only element I still have to include is matched stripes. I’m working on that blouse right now and will post about my trials and tribulations with it soon.

So, what does the boss think of this?

I thought so…gotta get back to work.

The new assistant

April 9, 2010

Well the lack of posting around here makes it clear that I have been quite busy, so it has been decided that I need a supervisory assistant to make sure I get the sewing done right.

This is Lavender. She’s a shelter cat who came into our life through the animal rescue group Action Volunteers for Animals who operate in the Greater Toronto Area of Ontario. I was really impressed with the dedication of the volunteer staff who took her future very seriously and made me promise to bring her back to visit at some point.

While she has very little of the attitude expected of the average Tortoiseshell cat, she has enough of it that I am sure she is head of her clique at her Victorian boarding school, so the name stays. She’s also bossy enough that the supervisory role in the sewing room comes easily to her. For example, in the above photo she exhibits clear disapproval with my pattern pieces.

Here she inspects my dart pinning.

Hopefully, with her help, I’ll get this SWAP done on time.

Afraid of the eighties

April 4, 2010

Happy Easter!

I hope the bunny delivered a sufficient amount of chocolate.

So I’ve finally finished the bottoms for my SWAP. Photos will be coming but I want to put some effort into them this time and take them outside now that the snow is gone and the neighbourhood near our new place is a touch more scenic than the old place was.

I’m down to three blouses, a vest and a dress… and it’s April 4th so we’ll have to see if I can pull this off.

I’ve been agonizing over one of the blouses a bit.

The plan was to do Vogue 8598 view B (the blue one) in a cream silk. I thought the silk would lend the right texture to the sleeves and make them flowy and a little whimsical, since controlled whimsy is a major aspect of my plan.

But I’ve been looking at the pattern and starting to wonder about the sleeves.

You see. I’m also working on a vest and the thought of combining the vest with this billowy sleeved blouse brought this to mind.

Now, I happen to really enjoy the movie Labyrinth and someday I would love to re-create a couple of costumes from it. This wasn’t one that I had in mind though.

While I’d be okay with echoing it, I would prefer not to look like I’m channeling the 80’s too much as they didn’t flatter me a whole lot the first time through, and, overall I’m pretty happy that their revival is over.

I’m also concerned because there’s a suggestion on Pattern Review that the fit of this pattern is hard to work with and I know my FBA skills are fledgling to say the least.

I don’t want to tear my hair out over something that makes me feel about 25 years out of date in the end.

Anybody have any opinions to share?
